Happiest I've Ever Been
In the two weeks since the wedding, people keep asking me the same question. "So, how does it feel to be married?"
I only have one answer, and I've given it every single time. This is the happiest I've ever been in my life.
Funny enough, I've never really heard anyone talk about their marriage like this, so I wanted to write it down.
The road here wasn't easy. There were relationships before this one that I lost, and a lot of frustrating dating on the apps - Bumble, Hinge, whatever. At some point I'd had enough. I swore off dating for a while and put everything into jiu-jitsu instead.
I only went back when I was intentional about it.
That's when I matched with Sanjoli. And she was intentional too. I found out later that she'd only just come back onto the app herself. We deleted it together.
Thirty days in, I asked her to commit to a proper relationship. To be my girlfriend, basically. In under six months we'd moved in together.
And then we did all the tough things. We had all the tough fights. All the things two people have to figure out when they decide to actually build a life together, we had to figure out. I restarted therapy, because I wanted to work on myself and become the person I wanted to be for this relationship. Honestly, when the marriage conversation came up, it might have been too early. But I worked through it. I faced a lot of things.
Then came the wedding, and none of it was perfect. There were a lot of things I didn't want, and things I was hesitant about, resistant to even. It was a bumpy ride. The months leading up to it were hectic, and if it was hectic for me, that's an understatement for Sanjoli by a long shot. She carried so much of it.
And then it was the 1st of July, and nothing, nothing, nothing - and I say it thrice - nothing could stop me from being happy that day.
I was so happy for all the struggles I'd left behind. And something just clicked. The amount of security I felt, the amount of safety, all at once. It felt like there was no going back, in the most good and wonderful way. No going back to those stupid apps. No going back to looking for someone. She was it. She was the one I loved. Our families came together, and together we were one.
When I put that ring on, it made me feel like this is who I am.
I still feel it. I love how that ring feels on my finger. I love who I am. I've started wanting to dress differently. I'm embracing the unc-dom, as they call it.
Even writing this, I have the widest smile on my face.
So if you ask me how it feels, that's still my answer. This is the happiest I've ever been.
